What you will find
The summit holds a reservoir that supplies drinking water to Ooty, ringed by thick forest. On clear mornings you can see ridge after ridge of the Nilgiris, and later in the day clouds often drift across the slopes. There is also a small cave nearby with local stories attached to it, which makes a short detour on foot.
The forest around the hill supports a good range of birds and plants, so birdwatchers and nature photographers tend to enjoy it most. Short walking trails lead off from the top.
Best time to go
Start early. The light is best and the views are clearest in the first hours of the morning, before mist and cloud build up. Carry a jacket even in summer, as the hilltop can be windy and cold. After heavy rain the approach road can be slippery, so check with your driver before setting out.
How to reach
The nearest airport is Coimbatore International, roughly 90 km away; from there a taxi or bus climbs the ghat road to the town. By rail, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs from Mettupalayam, about 50 km below Ooty, up to Udhagamandalam station, and Mettupalayam itself has trains from Coimbatore and Chennai. Regular buses also link Ooty with Coimbatore, Mysuru and Bengaluru.
From Ooty, Tiger Hills takes around 30 to 40 minutes by taxi, self-drive car or hired bike. Public transport does not go all the way, so a private vehicle is the practical option.
Tips for your visit
- Carry water and snacks; there are few shops at the top
- Wear shoes with grip for the trails and the cave path
- Keep a camera ready on the drive through the tea estates
- Pair it with other Ooty sightseeing on the same day
