Ooty travel guide

Ooty, or Udhagamandalam, is the best-known hill town of the Nilgiris and was the summer retreat of the British administration in the Madras Presidency. Old churches, cottages and clubs from that era still stand among eucalyptus and tea. The drive up is a long run of hairpin bends, and the town rewards slow days of walks, gardens and cool evenings.

What to see

Most visitors start with the Government Botanical Garden, laid out in 1848, which also has a model of a Toda hut showing how the Nilgiris' pastoral Toda people traditionally lived. Ooty Lake is good for a boat ride or a cycle along its edge, and the terraced Rose Garden is at its best in summer. Doddabetta, on the Kotagiri road, is the highest point in the Nilgiris and has a viewing tower.

The Nilgiri toy train

The metre-gauge Nilgiri Mountain Railway climbs from Mettupalayam through Coonoor to Ooty, crossing bridges and tunnels at a slow, steady pace. Even a short stretch, such as Coonoor to Ooty, gives a good feel for it. Seats sell out in season, so book early.

Best time to visit

March to June is the main season, with days of roughly 20 to 25°C and the flower show at the Botanical Garden in May. October to February is colder, often 5 to 15°C, with crisp clear mornings. July to September brings rain, green hillsides and full waterfalls such as Pykara, along with fewer visitors and easier hotel rates.

How to reach

Coimbatore airport is the nearest, about 100 km away. By rail, take a train to Mettupalayam or Coimbatore and continue by the toy train or by road. Well-kept ghat roads link Ooty with Coimbatore, Mysuru and the rest of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Tips for your visit

Carry a warm layer in every season, as evenings turn cold quickly. Give yourself time for Coonoor and Kotagiri, which are quieter and full of tea estates. We can build Ooty into a longer hill trip with Kodaikanal, Mysuru or Coorg.
