What to see
The church was built in the colonial style for the British community that made Ooty its summer retreat. Inside, look up at the heavy wooden beams and pillars supporting the roof, and at the stained glass windows, including a large one above the altar. The walls carry memorial plaques and carved details that reward a slow look.
The churchyard
The old cemetery behind the church contains graves of soldiers, officials and their families from the colonial period. Reading the inscriptions gives a glimpse of who lived in the Nilgiris in the nineteenth century and how many came from far away. Please walk quietly and respectfully, as it is still a place of remembrance.
Visiting tips
The church is part of the Church of South India. Visitors are welcome outside service times; dress modestly and keep noise low. Because it lies close to the Botanical Garden and the lake, it fits easily into a half-day tour of the town. Sunday mornings are busy with services, so a weekday visit is quieter if you want time to look around. Photography inside may be restricted; ask a church official before taking pictures.
How to reach
Coimbatore International Airport lies roughly 85–90 km away, a drive of three to four hours through the ghats. Udhagamandalam railway station, the terminus of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam, is about 1–2 km from the church, and the toy train ride itself is a highlight. Buses run to Ooty from Coimbatore, Mysuru and Bengaluru, and from the Ooty bus stand a taxi or auto will get you to the church in a few minutes. We can arrange a car for local sightseeing.
