What to see
The lake itself is calm and clear, edged by grassy slopes and patches of dense forest. Short walks along the shore give good views across the water, and several other reservoirs in the region can be seen from higher points. Bird watchers should bring binoculars, as the forest edges attract a variety of hill species.
The slopes around the lake are home to Neelakurinji, the shrub that covers the Nilgiris in blue flowers once every twelve years. You will also pass an unusual hill locally called Cauliflower Mountain and a small Bhavani Amman temple.
Entry and access
The area is part of a protected reserve, so private vehicles cannot drive all the way in. Visitors buy tickets at the forest check post and continue in a forest department vehicle that runs a set route with stops at viewpoints and the lake. Numbers are controlled, so on busy days there may be a wait. Trekking and camping inside need separate permission.
Best time to visit
The dry months from October to May are best for clear views. It is noticeably colder here than in Ooty town, so carry a warm layer at any time of year. During heavy monsoon rain access can be suspended.
Tips for your visit
Start early to reach the check post before the queues build. Wear comfortable shoes for the short walks from the vehicle stops. Carry water and a snack, since there are few shops inside, and take all litter back with you. We can combine Avalanche Lake with Emerald Lake and Upper Bhavani in a full-day Ooty countryside trip.
