What to see
The city's sights are mostly on its edges, towards the hills.
- Marudamalai Temple, a Murugan shrine on a hillock about half an hour from the centre, with good views
- Isha Yoga Centre at the foot of the Velliangiri hills, known for the Dhyanalinga
- Siruvani Waterfalls, about 35 km west, source of the city's famously sweet drinking water
- Parambikulam Tiger Reserve on the Kerala border, home to tigers, elephants and gaur
- Black Thunder water park near Mettupalayam at the foot of the Nilgiris
Climate and best time
Temperatures usually range between about 18°C and 35°C, and cool breezes through the Palakkad Gap keep the city fairly comfortable. October to March is the best time for sightseeing. April to June can be hot, with temperatures sometimes near 40°C, so plan outdoor visits for early mornings in those months.
Gateway to the hills
Coimbatore is the natural starting point for Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri, and it is also a convenient base for Kodaikanal and Valparai. Many travellers fly or take a train into the city, spend a night and then drive up the ghat roads the next morning. Buses to Ooty and Kodaikanal leave frequently through the day.
How to reach and get around
Coimbatore International Airport is about 10 km from the city centre and has regular domestic flights. Coimbatore Junction is a major railway station with trains to most parts of India. The city has several bus stands, including the Central, Thiruvalluvar and Ukkadam stands, which handle intercity and local services.
