About the trip
Ooty, or Udhagamandalam, is the best-known hill station in the Nilgiris, with its botanical garden, lake and toy train. It is a popular getaway from Mysore for families and newly married couples, especially in summer. The route runs through Nanjangud and Gundlupet, then crosses the Bandipur and Mudumalai forests, where deer and elephants are often seen, before climbing into the hills.

On the road
The forest stretch between Bandipur and Mudumalai closes at night (about 9 pm–6 am), so time the drive accordingly. From Theppakadu, cars take the Gudalur road or the steep Kalhatti ghat with 36 hairpins.
