What to see
The gardens hold more than 1,700 kinds of vascular plants, with neatly kept flower beds, lawns and shaded paths. Among the plants are Red Sanders and Cycas beddomei, both endemic to the hills of this region and closely protected.
The working side of the gardens is just as interesting. Around 500 kg of flowers are picked and sent every day for garlands and rituals at the Tirumala temple, and the gardens also supply other temples in and around Tirupati. If you visit in the morning you may see the picking and sorting under way. Take your time along the shaded paths, since the gardens are large and the walk from one section to the next can take a while. Photography is generally allowed in the open areas, but follow any signs near the working sections, and please do not pluck flowers, as every bloom here is grown for temple use.
Timings and tickets
Gates open at 6 AM and close at 6 PM, and entry is free. Mornings are cooler and better for walking, while late afternoon light suits photography.
How to reach
The gardens are about 25 km from Tirupati town by road, so a taxi or a pilgrimage vehicle is the easiest way to get there. Tirupati railway station is the nearest railhead, and Tirupati airport at Renigunta is the nearest airport; from either, arrange local transport for the rest of the way. When we plan a Tirupati darshan trip, we can fit the gardens in on the same day as the other Tirumala sights.
