Wildlife and landscape
Elephants are the most common large animal you will see, often near water. Spotted deer, gaur, langurs and wild boar are frequent, while tigers, leopards, sloth bears and golden jackals need more luck. The Moyar river cuts through the reserve, and the mix of forest types supports a long bird list, from hornbills to raptors.
Safaris
The Tamil Nadu Forest Department runs the safaris inside the core, using open jeeps and vans from the reception at Theppakadu. Private vehicles cannot enter the core. Trips run in the early morning and late afternoon, and seats are limited, so reach the counter early, especially at weekends.
Best time to visit
The forest can be visited through most of the year, but the most rewarding months are February to May and September to October, when animals gather near water and the roads are open. Heavy monsoon rain can bring temporary closures.
How to reach
Mudumalai sits on the road between Ooty and Mysuru, reached from Ooty via Gudalur or the steep Kalhatti ghat. The nearest railway station is at Mettupalayam or Udhagamandalam, and the nearest airports are Coimbatore and Mysuru. We can arrange a stay in Masinagudi or Theppakadu with safari bookings as part of a Nilgiris trip.
Tips for your visit
Wear muted colours, keep your voice low in the jeep, and never step out of a vehicle to approach animals. Feeding wildlife is prohibited. Carry binoculars, water and a light jacket for the cool mornings. Follow the forest staff's instructions at all times.
