Masinagudi travel guide

Masinagudi is a small village at the foot of the Nilgiris, about 30 km below Ooty, on the edge of the Mudumalai forests. Where Ooty is about gardens and cool air, Masinagudi is about wildlife: jeep safaris, elephants crossing the road and quiet forest resorts. It suits families, couples and photographers who want a few days close to nature.

Getting there from Ooty

The short road down from Ooty via Kalhatti drops steeply through 36 hairpin bends and dense forest. It is a thrilling drive but demanding, so we recommend an experienced hill driver, and the ghat has restrictions for some vehicles. The longer route via Gudalur is gentler and suits larger vehicles and anyone prone to motion sickness.

Safaris and wildlife

Forest Department jeep safaris are the main draw, and elephant rides are sometimes offered too. Common sightings include elephants, gaur (Indian bison) and spotted deer, and leopards are seen now and then. Early morning and late afternoon drives give the best chances. Safari tickets are sold on a first-come basis at the forest office, so arrive early in peak season. Keep noise low and never leave the vehicle inside the forest.

Birdwatching, short treks and visits to tribal hamlets round off a stay here.

Places nearby

Several forest reserves and landmarks lie within an hour or so of the village:

Shopping and stay

Local shops sell spices, tea, coffee powder, eucalyptus oil, wild honey and seasonal fruit such as jackfruit and mango, along with handicrafts. Places to stay range from budget cottages to comfortable forest resorts, many set in the jungle, so book ahead for weekends. Night driving through the forest roads is restricted, so plan to reach your stay before dark.

Best time and how to reach

Masinagudi is pleasant for most of the year, and October to May is the best period for safaris. Coimbatore airport is about 116 km away, and Mysore Junction, around 100 km, is the nearest major railway station. By road, it is closest to Ooty and also reachable from Mysore, Bangalore and Coimbatore.
