Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple, Madurai

Thiruparankundram, on the southern edge of Madurai, is counted first among the Arupadai Veedu, the six sacred abodes of Lord Murugan. The Subramaniya Swamy temple is cut into the base of a rocky hill and is believed to be around 2,000 years old. Devotees know it as the place where Murugan married Deivanai, which is why couples and families come here to pray for marriage and children.

The legend

According to the story, the sages turned to Lord Shiva when demons made their lives unbearable. From the sparks of Shiva's third eye Murugan was born, and he went on to defeat the demon Soorapadman, who became his peacock mount. After the victory Indra gave his daughter Deivanai to Murugan in marriage, and tradition places that wedding here.

What makes the temple special

Because the main shrine is carved from rock, the ritual bath is offered to Murugan's Vel (spear) rather than to the idol. Murugan and Deivanai are shown seated as bride and groom, which is not seen at the other five abodes. The sanctum also holds Shiva and Vishnu facing each other, along with Ganesha and Durga.

Look out for the white peacocks that live around the temple; many devotees believe they are celestial beings who came to witness the wedding. Of the several tanks around the hill, Saravana Poigai and Lakshmi Theertham are the best known. Devotees who register in advance can pull the golden chariot.

The temple is usually open from about 5:30 AM until 1 PM, then reopens at 4 PM and closes at 9 PM. Wear modest traditional clothes that cover shoulders and knees; footwear is left outside.

How to reach

The temple is roughly 10 km from central Madurai, about half an hour by road. Town buses run from Periyar and Thirumangalam bus stands and stop within walking distance of the entrance. Madurai Junction is the nearest railhead, and Madurai airport is close by, so a taxi from either is simple. We can include Thiruparankundram in a Madurai or Arupadai Veedu pilgrimage package.
