What to see
The Meenakshi Amman Temple is the reason most people come. Dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi and her consort Sundareswarar (Shiva), whose wedding it celebrates, it is known for its towering painted gopurams, the Golden Lotus Tank, the Thousand Pillar Hall and pillars that ring with musical notes when tapped.
A short walk south-east brings you to the Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal, a 17th-century palace with enormous columns and a courtyard where an evening sound and light show tells its story. The Gandhi Memorial Museum, housed in an old palace, keeps letters, photographs and the blood-stained cloth Gandhi wore on the day he was shot.

Thiruparankundram
On the southern edge of the city, The hill temple of Thiruparankundram counts among the six sacred abodes (Arupadai Veedu) of Lord Murugan. Tradition holds that Murugan married Deivanai here, and the main shrine is cut into the rock of the hill. It makes an easy half-day trip from the centre.
Chithirai festival
Madurai is at its liveliest during the Chithirai festival in April–May. The first part celebrates the divine wedding of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar, and the second follows Lord Kallazhagar as he travels from Alagar Kovil to the Vaigai. Processions fill the streets every evening, so book rooms early if you plan to be here.
Weather and best time
Summers are hot, with afternoons often touching 40°C, while winter nights rarely drop much below the mid-20s. October to March is the most comfortable time for walking around temples and markets.
How to reach
Madurai Airport is about 12 km from the city centre and has flights from Chennai, Bengaluru and other cities. Madurai Junction is a major railway station with direct trains across Tamil Nadu and beyond, and national highways link the city by bus to Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Kanyakumari and Kodaikanal. We can arrange a car and driver for temple circuits in and around the city.
