Meenakshi Amman Temple, Madurai

The Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple is the heart of Madurai, and the old city is built in concentric squares around it. Its 14 gopurams, covered in brightly painted figures, can be seen from across town. The goddess Meenakshi, a form of Parvati, receives worship before her consort Sundareswarar, a form of Shiva, which sets the temple apart. Plan at least two to three hours inside.

The legend

According to temple lore, the Pandya king Malayadhwaja and his queen prayed for a child, and a girl emerged from their sacrificial fire. The baby had three breasts, but a divine voice told them the third would disappear when she met her future husband. Meenakshi, whose name means 'fish-eyed', grew into a skilled ruler and warrior who mastered the 64 arts and conquered far and wide, until she faced Shiva in battle; at that moment the sign vanished and she recognised him as her consort. Their wedding is re-enacted every year.

What to see

The Nayak rulers rebuilt and expanded the temple, and the city's streets still follow its plan, named after Tamil months such as Chithirai and Avani Moola. The complex is said to hold over 33,000 sculptures across its halls. Look for the Kilikoondu Mandapam, where parrots were once kept, the Mudali Pillai Mandapam, and the Nataraja image here, which lifts the right foot instead of the left, the reverse of the usual pose.

The Golden Lotus Tank (Potramarai Kulam) is linked to the Tamil Sangam: tradition holds that a work of literature was placed on its water and judged worthy if it floated, a test the Thirukkural is said to have passed.

Festivals

The biggest is the Chithirai festival in April–May, which celebrates the divine wedding and draws enormous crowds to Madurai. The Float Festival (Teppam) on the Vandiyur tank, Avani Moolam and Navaratri are also major events.

Timings and dress code

Doors usually open at 5 am and close at 12:30 pm, reopening from 4 pm until 9:30 pm. Wear modest, traditional clothing with shoulders and knees covered; dhotis or trousers for men and a saree, or a churidar set with a dupatta, for women. Phones and cameras are not allowed inside, and there are counters to deposit them.

How to reach

Madurai airport is about 12 km from the temple, roughly half an hour by taxi. Madurai Junction railway station is within walking distance and has trains from Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Coimbatore and Kerala. Buses connect Madurai with every part of Tamil Nadu.
