About the trip
Masinagudi is a small forest village at the edge of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, at the foot of the Nilgiris. Visitors come for jeep safaris, elephant sightings and quiet jungle resorts. From Ooty, the shortest road drops sharply down the Kalhatti ghat with its 36 hairpin bends, a thrilling drive best left to an experienced hill driver in a well-kept car.

The Kalhatti ghat has 36 hairpins and is steep; the longer Gudalur road is gentler. Leave early for a morning safari at Theppakadu, as forest roads close to traffic after dark.
