About the trip
Ooty is the best-known hill town in the Nilgiris, and for Coimbatore families it is the obvious escape from the plains heat. The drive runs through Mettupalayam and then climbs the Kallar–Coonoor ghat with its 14 hairpin bends. Most people go for the cool air, tea gardens and a relaxed day by the lake, while others stay a night or two to see the quieter viewpoints.

On the road
Take the Mettupalayam road (NH 181) and climb via Burliyar and Coonoor. Leave by 6 am to reach the ghat before tourist traffic, and stop at Mettupalayam for breakfast.
