Veerapandi Gowmariamman Temple travel guide

Veerapandi, roughly 80 km west of Madurai near Theni, is home to the Gowmariamman temple, a shrine to a village goddess worshipped for healing. The deity is a swayambu, believed to have been found in the earth rather than carved. Its fame rests on the Chithirai festival in April–May, when the whole village fills with devotees carrying fire pots, lighting dough lamps and walking across burning coals.

History and legend

Tradition credits the temple to a Pandya ruler named Veera Pandi, from whom the village takes its name. The story goes that the king suffered from an eye ailment that no remedy could cure. On a sage's advice he prayed to Gowmariamman and to Kanneswaramudaiyar, the Shiva of this place, and his sight returned. He raised the temple in gratitude, and to this day the goddess is approached by people with eye trouble, measles and other infections.

Rituals you will see

Worship here is intense and physical, especially during the festival:

The Chithirai festival

The annual festival runs for about eight days in the Tamil month of Chithirai, usually in early May. Neem and mango leaf festoons go up across the village to mark its start. The goddess appears to devotees in a different decoration each day, the temple car is drawn through the streets, and the fire-walk is the high point towards the end. Expect large crowds and book rooms in Theni or Madurai early.

Timings and how to reach

Darshan runs 5 am–12 pm and 4–9 pm daily. Madurai is the gateway: its airport and railway station are the nearest, and buses and taxis run from Madurai to Veerapandi in about two hours. We can plan the drive together with other temples in the Theni and Cumbum valley.

Nearby temples

Pilgrims often add the Kannagi temple, the Sri Saneeswara Bhagavan temple, the Vellappar temple and the Kamatchi Amman temple to the same trip. Modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is expected at all of them.
