History and name
The name is traditionally linked to Trishira, a three-headed demon whom Shiva defeated and granted salvation. The British wrote it as Trichinopoly. Over the centuries the town passed from the Cholas to the Pallavas, Pandyas, Vijayanagara and the Nayaks of Madurai, who built much of the Rockfort complex. Today it is also known for its colleges and engineering institutes.
Best time to visit
October to March is the pleasant stretch, with cooler days suited to temple walking. The Pongal season in January also brings jallikattu events to villages around the district. April and May are very hot, so start early and rest through midday if you travel then.
How to reach and getting around
Tiruchirappalli International Airport has domestic and international flights, and Tiruchirappalli Junction is a major rail hub on the Chennai–Madurai line. The city is about 110 km from Virudhachalam by road, a comfortable drive we arrange often. Autos and app cabs move you between the Rockfort, Srirangam and Thiruvanaikoil.
Food and trip ideas
Meals here are classic Tamil: idli, dosa, pongal and rice with paruppu podi and ghee, served in busy vegetarian messes near the temples. Trichy pairs naturally with Thanjavur and Kumbakonam for a Chola heritage circuit of four or five days.
