Temples to visit
Gowthameswarar Temple stands opposite the Mahamaham tank, and pilgrims often bathe in the tank before worship. Nageswaran Temple is linked to the legend of the serpent Adisesha, who prayed here to Shiva and Parvati. At Abhimukeswarar Temple, also important during Mahamaham, the image of Saturn stands taller than the other planetary deities. Venkatachalapathy Temple is one of the Vishnu shrines in a largely Shaiva town. Most temples follow similar hours, opening early and shutting for a few hours after noon.

Mahamaham and the ghats
The Mahamaham festival falls once in twelve years. On the main day, pilgrims bathe in the Mahamaham tank and then at the Bhagavatha Padithurai on the Kaveri, believing the water washes away sins. The ghat is a peaceful place to watch daily rituals at other times too. The town also has a branch of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham.
Shopping and food
Kumbakonam is known for brass and bronze ware, silk sarees from nearby weaving villages and its strong filter coffee. Try the local vegetarian meals and sweets at the older eateries around the temples. Many temples close in the early afternoon, so start early, rest at midday and resume from about 4 pm. Carry a cloth bag for footwear, as you will remove your shoes many times a day.
Best time and how to reach
October to March, when the weather is cooler, is the best time. Plan two days for the main town temples, or four to five to include the Navagraha circuit and Darasuram at a relaxed pace.
Tiruchirappalli airport is about 96 km away. Kumbakonam railway station has good connections, and state buses and private cars link it to Thanjavur, Chidambaram and Chennai. From Virudhachalam it is an easy drive, and we can arrange temple tours and Navagraha packages.
