The legend
The story goes that the young Murugan asked Brahma to explain the meaning of the sacred syllable Om. When Brahma could not, Murugan imprisoned him. Shiva then asked his son to explain it himself, and Murugan agreed only if Shiva approached him as a humble student. Shiva did so, and Murugan whispered the meaning to him. The place came to be called Swamimalai, and the deity Swaminatha, the lord who taught the lord.
What to see
The climb to the sanctum is by 60 steps, one for each year of the 60-year Tamil calendar cycle. They are held in reverence much like the 18 steps at Sabarimala, and special pujas are held on them at Tamil New Year. In the sanctum, Murugan stands holding his staff, adorned with holy ash, and is dressed in a different alankaram (decoration) at different times, from simple ash to royal attire.
Devotion and festivals
Devotees fulfil vows by tonsuring their heads, carrying milk pots and kavadis, and piercing themselves with small vels. The main festivals are Thai Poosam, Vaikasi Visakam, Panguni Uthiram and Kanda Sashti, when the temple is at its busiest.
Visiting information
The temple is generally open from early morning until around noon and from 4 pm into the evening; timings can change on festival days. Modest clothing with shoulders and knees covered is expected. Swamimalai is also known for its bronze-casting workshops, and it is worth stopping to watch the artisans at work.
How to reach
Swamimalai is about 8 km from Kumbakonam, which has good bus and rail connections across Tamil Nadu; local buses and autos cover the last stretch. Tiruchirappalli is the nearest airport, with Madurai as another option. We can include Swamimalai in a Kumbakonam and Thanjavur temple circuit from Virudhachalam.
