History
The temple here dates back more than a thousand years and was enlarged by later dynasties. In the eighteenth century, Srirangapatna became the seat of the Mysore kingdom under Hyder Ali and then Tipu Sultan. Tipu died defending the fort against the British in 1799, and after his death the British took over his summer palace. The fort walls, gateways and monuments from that period are still scattered across the island.
Slowing down
Beyond the main sights, Srirangapatna is pleasant simply to walk around. Mornings by the river are calm, and small eateries serve simple South Indian meals and filter coffee. Local guides at the monuments can fill in the stories of the siege.
Best time to visit
October to March brings pleasant weather for sightseeing. From June to August, Ranganathittu is busy with nesting birds, which is a good reason to visit in the early monsoon despite the rain.
How to reach
Mysuru airport is the closest, while Bengaluru has the main international airport. Srirangapatna railway station is close to the sights, and most trains on the Bengaluru–Mysuru line stop here. The town also sits on the Bengaluru–Mysuru highway, with frequent buses and taxis.
