What to see

The main shrine holds a standing image of Vishnu as Varadaraja, the giver of boons, with a separate shrine for his consort. A highlight for visitors is the display of all 108 forms of Vishnu, one for each of the Divya Desam temples, set around a mirror that devotees walk past to see every form.

Rituals and offerings

The temple is well known for Annaprasanam, the ceremony in which a baby tastes its first rice in the presence of the deity, as a prayer for good health. Devotees offer tulasi garlands, ghee, sandal paste, new cloth and sweet pongal, and sponsor Thirumanjanam, the ceremonial bath of the deity. Many also give food and clothes to the poor around the temple, a practice seen especially on festival days and Purattasi Saturdays.

Timings and how to reach

Darshan hours are 6 am–12 noon and 4–9 pm every day. Dress is not strictly enforced, but covering the shoulders and knees is respectful.

The Puducherry bus stand is a short walk away, with direct buses from Chennai. Trains reach Puducherry from Chennai and other cities, and Chennai airport is roughly three hours by road. The Vedapureeswarar and Kanniga Parameswari temples are nearby, making a pleasant morning walk. Early mornings and evenings are the calmest times; Purattasi Saturdays and Vaikunta Ekadasi bring long queues, so allow extra time then, and leave footwear at the stand outside.
