What to see
The village showcases crafts that have been practised in the region for generations, alongside newer designs. Look for terracotta figures and lamps, wood carvings, clay pottery and decorative items. Much of the work is produced on site, so you can see the process from raw material to finished piece.
Try it yourself
Demonstrations are part of the visit, and visitors are often invited to have a go, for example shaping wet clay on a potter's wheel. Short audio-visual presentations explain the history of Indian crafts and the people who keep them going. Children usually enjoy the hands-on part most.
Shopping
Pieces are on sale at the village, so you are buying from the source and supporting the artisans directly. Prices are generally fixed, and items range from small gifts to large decorative pieces; ask about packing if you are carrying fragile terracotta home.
Puducherry and its crafts
French rule in Puducherry lasted until 1954, and the town's mix of Tamil and French influences shows in its buildings, food and design. The craft village adds the Tamil side of that story, rooted in local religious and village traditions. Its wider aim is to keep older crafts alive by giving artisans a place to work, teach and sell, and by connecting them with visitors and learners from India and abroad.
How to reach
Murungapakkam is about 5 km from Puducherry railway station, a short auto or taxi ride. From Chennai International Airport the drive via the East Coast Road is roughly 150 km. It is easy to combine with the Chunnambar boat house or a trip to Paradise Beach, and we can include it in a Puducherry day tour.
