What to see along the seafront
The walk passes several landmarks: the Gandhi statue surrounded by old stone pillars, the French War Memorial, the Old Lighthouse and the former town hall buildings. Just behind the seafront, the grid of White Town has mustard and white colonial houses, the French Institute, cafes and bakeries. The Pondicherry Museum and the Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple are a short walk inland.

Best time to go
Early morning, for sunrise over the sea, and evening, when families come out and vendors set up, are the nicest times. In the evenings the road is usually closed to vehicles, which makes the walk pleasant. For the town as a whole, October to March brings the most comfortable weather.
Is it safe to swim?
No. The shoreline is lined with rocks and the waves break hard against them, so this is a place for walking and sitting, not bathing. For sand and calmer water, head to Paradise Beach (reached by boat from Chunnambar), Serenity Beach or Auroville Beach.
Food and shopping nearby
Cafes and restaurants along Beach Road and inside White Town serve everything from South Indian snacks to French-style pastries. Goubert Market is the place for local street food, while MG Road, Nehru Street and Mission Street are good for clothing, handicrafts and souvenirs.
Tips for your visit
Allow a couple of hours if you combine the beach with a walk through the French Quarter. The promenade is clean and flat, so it suits families and older travellers. Carry water in the daytime, as there is little shade along the front.
