Palakkad travel guide

Palakkad lies at the foot of the Western Ghats, beside the Palakkad Gap, the break in the mountains that links Kerala with Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. Wide paddy fields have earned the district the name 'rice bowl of Kerala', and the hills around it hold dams, tea estates and two outstanding protected forests. It is a good base for travellers who want nature without the crowds of Kerala's coast.

What to see

The district's main attractions are spread out, so plan a day for each area:

About the name

The name is usually traced to the pala tree (Alstonia scholaris), once common in the forests here and known for its strongly scented flowers. Palakkad borders Thrissur, Malappuram and Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore district, and its culture shows influences from both states.

Best time to visit

December to February is the most pleasant time, with cooler mornings of around 19°C. March to May is hot and humid, with highs near 37°C. The monsoon, which runs from June well into the autumn, makes the hills green and the dams full, but rain can close forest roads and treks.

How to reach

Coimbatore airport is the closest, about 55 km away, with Kochi and Kozhikode airports around 100 to 115 km. Palakkad Junction railway station has trains from Chennai, Bengaluru and the rest of Kerala. Buses run frequently from Coimbatore and Thrissur. We can plan a Palakkad trip with Silent Valley or Parambikulam permits arranged in advance.
