The lake
The sanctuary takes its name from Pocharam Lake, which formed when a dam was built across the Allair stream between 1916 and 1922. The reservoir is the heart of the park and draws water birds throughout the cooler months. Early mornings, when mist sits on the water, are the best time for both birds and photographs. The dam itself is a pleasant spot to stop, with views across the reservoir to the tree line.
Wildlife
The forest shelters several antelope species along with predators that are seen far less often. Patience helps here: stand quietly near the forest edge and you may spot deer or antelope grazing.
- Sambar, nilgai, chinkara and four-horned antelope
- Blackbuck
- Leopard, sloth bear and wild dog
- Wolf, jackal and jungle cat
Birds
Birdwatchers come for the wetland species that gather on and around the lake, including painted storks, bar-headed geese, ruddy shelducks (Brahminy ducks), spoonbills, herons, and both black ibis and white ibis. Peafowl are common in the forest. Winter is the best season for migrants. Bring binoculars, as many birds keep to the far side of the water, and a field guide or birding app helps with identification.
Trekking and tips
A trekking trail of about 4.5 km runs through forest and marshy ground, giving a good feel for the landscape. Wear sturdy shoes, carry water and keep noise low. Facilities inside the sanctuary are basic, so bring snacks and plan to leave before dark. Check entry timings and permit requirements with the forest department before you set out, as rules can change with the season.
We can arrange a day trip by car from Hyderabad or combine Pocharam with other stops in the Nizamabad and Medak area.
