Nizamabad travel guide

Nizamabad in northern Telangana has been ruled by many dynasties over the centuries, and its monuments reflect that mixed past. The town makes a good base for a slow couple of days: a hilltop fort with a Rama temple, lakeside gardens at Alisagar, forest and wildlife at Pocharam and Mallaram, a large dam at Pochampad and a useful museum. It is an easy trip by road or rail from Hyderabad.

What to see

Planning your visit

Spend one day in and around town for the fort, the museum, Kanteshwar and an evening at Alisagar, and a second day for Pocharam and Pochampad. The fort temple's long corridors and pillared halls are worth time, so do not rush it. Pocharam, once a hunting ground of the Nizams, is best in the early morning when birds and animals are most active. The Manjira river near the sanctuary has a small dam where people stop to walk.

Best time to visit

The cooler months from October to March suit outdoor sightseeing best. Summer days can be very hot in this part of Telangana.

How to reach

Hyderabad airport is the closest, about 200 km away, with cabs and buses onward. Nizamabad has good rail links to Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Bhopal, Bengaluru and cities across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Buses between Hyderabad and Nizamabad run very frequently, including private Volvo coaches. We can arrange a car from Hyderabad for a two-day loop.
