What to expect
There is no building or ticket counter here, just the viewpoint and the forest around it. On a still morning you can hear birds and moving leaves far below, and clouds often drift at eye level. The view changes by the minute as fog rolls in and clears, which makes it a favourite with photographers. It is also a good place simply to sit with a cup of tea from one of the stalls near the road.
Things to do
Most visitors spend thirty minutes to an hour here.
- Photograph the valley at sunrise or late afternoon
- Birdwatch along the edge in the early morning
- Take a short walk on the forest paths nearby
- Combine it with Pillar Rocks, Guna Caves, Bryant Park and Coaker's Walk
Best time to visit
October to February usually gives the clearest skies. Within a day, the first hours after opening and the late afternoon are best, as midday haze can flatten the view. The spot stays open in the monsoon, but rain and fog often hide the valley completely, and the roads become slippery.
How to reach
Silent Valley lies on the forest circuit outside Kodaikanal town and is easiest to cover by taxi as part of a sightseeing loop. Madurai airport is about 120 km from Kodaikanal, and Kodai Road railway station about 80 km, with buses and taxis from both. Regular buses also connect Kodaikanal with Madurai, Coimbatore and Chennai. Our Kodaikanal packages include this viewpoint in the day's sightseeing.
Tips for your visit
Carry a light jacket even in summer, as the wind at the edge is cool. Toilets are not reliably available, so plan stops in town. Stay behind the railings and keep children close, since the drop is steep.
