What you will see
The walk from the road runs through shola forest and tall pines, with the roots of old trees snaking over the path. At the end, you look down into dark fissures in the rock that drop steeply out of sight. Bats live in the chambers below, and mist often drifts through, which gives the spot an eerie feel.
Safety and access
The inner caves are dangerous, slippery and very deep, and entry into them has been closed for years for safety reasons. Visitors are allowed only up to the barricaded viewpoints. Keep to the marked path, hold children's hands and do not climb over the fencing. People with heart or breathing problems should take the uneven path slowly. Several people lost their lives in the fissures over the years, which is why the rules are strictly enforced.
Tips for your visit
Go in the morning before clouds roll in and crowds build. Wear shoes with good grip, since the path can be wet. Monkeys are common, so keep food out of sight. A small entry ticket is usually charged at the gate. Allow about an hour including the walk in and out, and carry a light jacket, as the forest stays cool even in summer.
