The legend
After the Kurukshetra war, the sage Vyasa looked for a quiet spot for meditation and made his home in the Dandakaranya forest. Pleased with his devotion, Saraswati appeared before him, and at his request agreed to stay and bless visitors. Along with her, the goddesses Mahalakshmi and Kali also appeared at the spot. The place was first called Vyasapuri after the sage, and in time the name changed to Basar.
The temple
Do not expect elaborate carving or towering gopurams; the shrine is modest. A short walk from the entrance brings you to the sanctum, where Saraswati holds a veena and her image is covered with turmeric. Separate shrines in the same complex honour Mahalakshmi and Kali.
Akshara Abhyasam
The most important ritual here is Akshara Abhyasam, when a child, often aged two to five, is guided to write the first letters in the presence of the goddess. Priests conduct the ceremony through the day, and families book tickets at the temple counter. Arrive early on auspicious days, as the queue can be long.
Festivals
Vasantha Panchami, Saraswati's special day, is the busiest time, with thousands of children brought for Akshara Abhyasam. Navaratri and Vijayadasami, when learning and new beginnings are celebrated, and Maha Shivaratri also draw large crowds.
How to reach
Basar lies in Nirmal district, roughly 200 km north of Hyderabad, and has its own railway station on the line between Hyderabad and Nanded. Hyderabad airport is the nearest. Road trips from Hyderabad take around four to five hours. We can combine Basar with Nizamabad or with Kawal forest.
