About the trip
Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara empire and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site spread across a landscape of giant boulders along the Tungabhadra. Visitors come for the temples, royal enclosures, bazaars and sunset views from the hills. From Hubballi the drive runs east via Gadag and Koppal. The main sites can be seen in a full day, though many prefer a night in Hospet.

On the road
Take NH 67 via Gadag and Koppal to Hospet, then on to Hampi. Leave by 6 am, carry water and a hat, and hire a local guide for the ruins.
