About this trail

Swamimalai is the highest point in the Yelagiri hills. The trail from Mangalam village follows village lanes and then climbs through dry deciduous forest and over rocky slopes to the summit. Birds and butterflies are common along the way, and flowering trees add colour in the right season. From the top, the whole Yelagiri plateau and the valleys below are laid out in view.

The round trip is 6 km and takes about three hours. It is easy enough for beginners, families and students. Start early to avoid the sun on the rocky upper section, and carry water and a cap. Pair it with the Jalagamparai trek for a full Yelagiri weekend.

What to carry

Good to know

These are guided trails run with the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, and each has a daily limit on walkers. Book a few days ahead, carry the same photo ID you booked with, and expect a trail to close at short notice after heavy rain or when elephants are active nearby. We book the permit, arrange the car to and from the start point and, if you want, a hotel nearby for the night before.
