About this trail

Gudiyam is one of the closest forest walks to Chennai and one of the oldest human sites in the region. Stone tools and other traces of early people have turned up in and around its large rock shelter. The trail from the reception point crosses tropical dry evergreen forest and rocky ground before reaching the caves, which sit low, at under 150 metres above sea level.

The route is about 9 km in total and takes around four hours. It is flat enough for beginners and makes a good outing for students and history lovers. The heat builds quickly here, so the cooler months from October to March are the only sensible time to go.

What to carry

Good to know

These are guided trails run with the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, and each has a daily limit on walkers. Book a few days ahead, carry the same photo ID you booked with, and expect a trail to close at short notice after heavy rain or when elephants are active nearby. We book the permit, arrange the car to and from the start point and, if you want, a hotel nearby for the night before.
