History
The caves are credited to the Vishnukundina dynasty, which held this region from roughly the 5th to the 7th century AD. The earliest excavations appear to have served as a Buddhist monastery for bhikkhus, and the cell-like layout of some chambers still recalls a vihara. Over time the site was reworked into Hindu shrines, chiefly for Anantha Padmanabha and Narasimha, while traces of Buddhist and Jain use remain.
The caves are cut straight into the sandstone hillside, and the style shows influences associated with both Gupta and Chalukya work.
What to see
- The four-storey Anantha Padmanabha cave, the largest in the group, with a monolithic image of Vishnu reclining on the serpent Ananta.
- A cave dedicated to the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.
- Carved panels and faded murals of mythological scenes; look for how often elephants appear in the carvings.
- Images of Ganesha and Narasimha that are still worshipped, often with fresh flowers.
- Gardens in front of the caves and views over green fields towards the Krishna.
Timings and tickets
The site is usually open every day from 9 am until 5:30 pm, though some listings give 6 pm as the closing time. Tickets are modest for Indian visitors and higher for foreign nationals, and a small extra charge applies to video cameras. Check the current rates at the counter.
Best time to visit
October to February is the most pleasant period, with cooler days that suit walking between the caves. Summer in the Guntur and Vijayawada area can touch 40°C, and heavy monsoon rain makes the hillside less comfortable to explore.
How to reach and tips
Vijayawada railway station and the main bus station are both about 6 km away, and Vijayawada airport at Gannavaram is about 26 km. An autorickshaw or taxi from the city is the simplest option.
Monkeys are common around the caves and can snatch bags, food and water bottles, so keep belongings close. You can combine the visit with Kanaka Durga Temple, Prakasam Barrage, Mangalagiri and Kondapalli Fort.
