What to see

Vellore Fort is the centrepiece. Built in the 16th century, it covers about 133 acres and is still surrounded by a wide moat. Inside are the Jalakandeswarar temple, the Church of St John, the tombs of Tipu Sultan's family and a museum with old sculptures.

• Jalakandeswarar Temple: a 16th-century Shiva temple inside the fort, known for its carved mandapam
• Sripuram Golden Temple: a shrine to Sri Lakshmi Narayani, covered in gold leaf and set in large, well-kept gardens
• Ratnagiri Murugan Temple: a hill temple that draws big crowds on Murugan festival days
• Yelagiri Hills: a small hill station within easy driving distance

Food to try

Ambur biryani, cooked with short-grain seeraga samba rice, is the local speciality, and parotta with salna is a popular evening meal.

Best time to visit

November to February is the most comfortable time for the fort and temples, with pleasant mornings and evenings. March to June is very hot, with temperatures reaching around 40°C, so most visitors avoid it, though a temple visit after sunset is still manageable. The monsoon, from about July to October, brings heavy showers that can make roads slippery but leaves the countryside green.

How to reach

Chennai and Bengaluru airports are both within a few hours by road. Katpadi Junction, Vellore's main railway station, has good trains from Chennai, Bengaluru and beyond, and highways connect the city with Tirupati, Chennai and Bengaluru. From Virudhachalam and central Tamil Nadu, Vellore fits well into a northern Tamil Nadu temple circuit, which we can plan end to end.

Tips for your visit

Temples expect modest dress with shoulders and knees covered, so avoid shorts. Allow a day for the city itself, or two to three days if you add Yelagiri.
