Velankanni travel guide

Velankanni is a small seaside town on the Bay of Bengal, a short distance south of Nagapattinam. It is known across India for its great basilica dedicated to the Virgin Mary, whom devotees call Arokia Matha or Velankanni Matha. Nicknamed the Lourdes of the East, it draws pilgrims of many faiths throughout the year, and it is within a comfortable drive of our base in Virudhachalam.

The Basilica

The white church with its red-tiled roofs and Gothic-style spires is the heart of town. Masses are said in several languages, including Tamil, English, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, Hindi, Konkani and Marathi, reflecting the range of visitors. Many pilgrims complete a vow by moving on their knees along a sand path of about 600 metres leading to the shrine.

Tradition records several miracles here: the Virgin appeared to a shepherd boy, cured a lame boy who sold buttermilk, and saved Portuguese sailors caught in a storm, who then built the first chapel in gratitude.

What else to see

Next to the Basilica, a museum displays offerings left by grateful devotees, from silver and gold models to letters of thanks. Velankanni beach, lined with palms, is steps away and busy in the evenings. Nearby Nagapattinam and Nagore add important Hindu and Muslim shrines, making this stretch of coast unusually diverse.

Best time to visit

November to February is the most pleasant time, with temperatures of roughly 21°C to 29°C. March to June is hot and humid. The annual feast, from late August to 8 September, draws enormous crowds; book well ahead if you plan to attend.

How to reach and practical tips

Velankanni railway station is less than a kilometre from the Basilica, and the bus stand is also close by. Tiruchirappalli has the nearest airport, around 150 km away. Seafood, biryani and South Indian meals are easy to find in town, and shops sell religious articles and handicrafts. Dress modestly inside the church. We can arrange a Velankanni trip or combine it with Nagapattinam and the delta temples.
