What to see
The temple is set in a walled compound at the foot of rocky hills. The outer walls carry bands of sculpture showing gods, goddesses, celestial dancers and musicians, carved with fine detail and a sense of movement. Inside, further images of deities line the walls around the sanctum. Photographers and architecture enthusiasts can easily spend an hour studying the panels, many of them still crisp after centuries.
History
Maru-Gurjara architecture developed in Rajasthan and Gujarat in the early medieval period and is known for its richly carved exteriors. Ambika Mata is one of the best surviving examples of its early phase and gives a sense of the craft that later flowered in Rajasthan's Jain and Hindu temples. Although it is protected as a monument, it remains a living shrine, and festivals of the goddess, especially Navaratri, bring crowds of devotees.
Timings and dress
You can visit every day between 6 am and 9 pm. There is no strict dress code, but clothes covering shoulders and knees are respectful. Remove footwear before entering the shrine, and ask before photographing people at worship. There are few facilities in the village itself, so carry water and snacks, particularly if you are visiting in the warmer months.
Best time and how to reach
October to March brings pleasant weather for sightseeing in Rajasthan; summer afternoons are very hot. Jagat is best reached by taxi from Udaipur, a drive of around an hour and a half, though local buses also run. The trip combines easily with a day of sightseeing in Udaipur, and we can add it to a Rajasthan itinerary on request.
