Swetharanyeswarar Temple (Budhan Temple), Thiruvenkadu

The Swetharanyeswarar Temple at Thiruvenkadu, in Mayiladuthurai district, is an ancient Shiva temple and one of the nine Navagraha temples of the Kaveri delta. Here the planet Budhan (Mercury), linked with intelligence and learning, has a special shrine. Shiva is worshipped as Swetharanyeswarar with his consort Brahma Vidyambigai, and the temple is also known for its rare form of Shiva as Aghora Murthy.

Legends

The temple is said to have been worshipped by Brahma, by Indra and by Airavata, Indra's white elephant. The best-known story concerns a demon who attacked the devotees here. Nandi tried to stop him and was wounded; the Nandi image in the temple still shows marks said to be those injuries. Angered, Shiva took the fierce form of Aghora Murthy and destroyed the demon.

Because of its sanctity, Thiruvenkadu is sometimes compared to Kashi (Varanasi).

Worship of Budhan

Devotees visit through the year to pray to Budhan for wisdom, clear speech and success in studies, and to ease difficult planetary periods. Offerings of cloth and grains are made at his shrine, often alongside a special archanai. Most pilgrims visit as part of a Navagraha circuit covering all nine temples, usually spread over two days with Kumbakonam as the base. Early morning is the quietest time for darshan, and Wednesdays, the day linked with Budhan, draw larger crowds.

Festivals

The main festival is a ten-day chariot festival in the Tamil month of Thai (mid-January to mid-February). Its fifth day, dedicated to Aghora Murthy, is the most important, with special pujas and rituals. Pradosham days and Maha Shivaratri also bring large gatherings of devotees.

Timings and how to reach

The temple is open from 6 am to 12 noon and from 4 pm to 9 pm.
