Telangana travel guide

Telangana became India's newest state on 2 June 2014, when it was carved out of Andhra Pradesh. It sits on the Deccan Plateau and mixes Telugu traditions with the legacy of the Deccan sultans and the Nizams. Most trips start in Hyderabad, the capital, and then head out to Kakatiya-era temples and forts, Nagarjuna Sagar and the countryside, with plenty of good food along the way.

What to see

Hyderabad alone can fill two or three days, with Charminar, Golconda Fort, the Salar Jung Museum and Ramoji Film City. Beyond the capital, the Kakatiya dynasty left some of the finest temples in the Deccan.

Land and culture

The state covers about 112,077 sq km across 33 districts, with the Godavari and Krishna as its major rivers. The terrain is largely semi-arid, broken by rocky hills, lakes and forests, including the Kawal Tiger Reserve. Telugu is the official language, with Urdu as the second official language. Bathukamma and Bonalu are the signature festivals, and Perini Shivatandavam, a warrior dance from the Kakatiya period, is the state's best-known dance form.

Food to try

Hyderabadi biryani and haleem, the slow-cooked wheat, lentil and meat dish eaten during Ramzan, are the famous names. Look out too for rural favourites such as sarva pindi, a crisp pancake of rice flour, chilli and groundnuts, and pesarattu, a dosa made from whole moong dal.

Best time to visit

October to March is the most comfortable period, with cool mornings that suit fort climbs and temple visits. Summer, from March to June, often crosses 40°C. The monsoon months of July to September bring moderate rain, greener countryside and fuller waterfalls.
