Inside the fort
Within the long walls are ruined palaces, pillared halls, water tanks, cenotaphs and a mosque. The busiest spot is the Trinetra Ganesh Temple, where devotees come in large numbers and send wedding invitations to Lord Ganesha. The climb through the gateways is steady but not difficult, and the views over lakes and forest are wide.
The national park
Ranthambore is known above all for its tigers, and also shelters leopards, sloth bears, sambar, chital and more than 300 kinds of birds. Safaris run in two shifts each day in open 6-seater Gypsies or larger Canters. Book through the Rajasthan Forest Department's official website or an authorised operator, and do it well ahead in winter. Carry the same photo ID you used when booking, as it is checked at the gate.
Best time to visit
The core safari zones are open from October to June and closed during the monsoon, roughly July to September. Winter is comfortable for exploring the fort, while April to June is hot but often gives the best tiger sightings near water.
How to reach
Sawai Madhopur railway station is on the Delhi–Mumbai main line, with good trains from Delhi, Jaipur and Kota. The nearest airport is Jaipur, about three to four hours away by road. The fort can be reached by road from the town, but as it lies inside the reserve, forest entry timings and rules apply.
Tips for your visit
- Plan on two days if you can: one for safaris, one for the fort.
- Wear comfortable shoes and neutral-coloured clothes for the safari.
- Carry water, a hat and a warm layer for winter morning drives.
- Keep children seated and quiet in the vehicle.
