Sri Agneeswarar Temple, Nalladai travel guide

The Sri Agneeswarar Temple stands in the village of Nalladai, a short drive from Mayiladuthurai in the Kaveri delta. Spread over about two acres, it is a Shiva temple with three entrance towers and a sanctum where the deity faces west, which is unusual. Devotees born under the Bharani star treat it as their special shrine, and many families come here with prayers for marriage and children.

What to see

The complex is entered through three gateways, each crowned by its own gopuram. Inside, Lord Shiva is worshipped as Agneeswarar in the main shrine, and water is kept around the idol to cool it, a practice devotees point out on their visit.

The west-facing sanctum is the detail most people come to see. Shiva temples usually face east, so a west-facing lingam is considered especially potent, and the temple counts among the shrines linked to the 27 nakshatras.

The legend of the silk offering

Local tradition tells of the sage Mrukanda Maharishi, who held a fire ritual here in honour of the deity. Worshippers brought silk cloth as offerings, and the sage fed the silks straight into the flames. When the surprised crowd was asked to look into the sanctum, the same silks were found draped on the lingam. The story explains why offerings made through fire are believed to reach the Lord here, and why the temple is tied to the Bharani star, whose presiding deity is linked to Agni.

Festivals

The temple follows the Shaiva festival calendar. The main occasions are:

How to reach

Nalladai is close to Mayiladuthurai, which is the practical base. Buses, taxis and autorickshaws run from Mayiladuthurai town to the village. Mayiladuthurai Junction is the nearest railway station, and Tiruchirappalli International Airport is the closest airport. From Virudhachalam the drive towards Mayiladuthurai is easy to combine with other delta temples, and we can arrange a car for the day.

Tips for your visit

The sanctum closes in the afternoon, so plan to arrive in the morning or after 5 pm. Wear modest traditional clothes that cover the shoulders and knees. If you are visiting for a Bharani-star parihara puja, ask the temple priests in advance about the ritual and the offerings they suggest.
