What to see

Beyond the main sights, Mount Abu has old royal holiday homes, British-era bungalows and villages of the local tribal communities scattered across the plateau.

• Nakki Lake: the centre of town life, with boating and a lakeside promenade; some of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes are said to have been immersed here
• Toad Rock: a large boulder shaped like a crouching toad above Nakki Lake, reached by a short walk, with good views
• Guru Shikhar: the highest peak of the Aravallis, with a small Dattatreya temple reached by about 300 steps
• Dilwara Jain Temples: a group of five marble temples dating from the 11th to 13th centuries, under 3 km from town

Dilwara temples

The Dilwara temples are the highlight for most visitors. From outside they look plain, but inside every ceiling, pillar and doorway is carved from white marble in astonishing detail. Plan at least an hour here, and remember that phones and cameras are not allowed inside.

Walks and viewpoints

Mount Abu suits easy walking. Trails lead from Nakki Lake to Toad Rock and around the surrounding hills, and sunset from the viewpoints near the lake is a local ritual. Many visitors pair the town with nearby Udaipur, which is a few hours' drive away.

Best time to visit

The weather is pleasant most of the year, but November to March is the most comfortable time, with cool days and cold nights. Pack a light jacket in winter.

How to reach

The nearest railway station is Abu Road, around 28 km down the hill, with trains from Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur. Udaipur has the nearest airport, while Ahmedabad's airport offers many more flights. A good highway links Abu Road with the rest of Rajasthan and Gujarat, and taxis and buses climb to the hill station. We can build Mount Abu into a Rajasthan or Gujarat itinerary.
