What to expect
Driving along this stretch you see water on both sides, and in the evening the lights along the road reflect in the river. The beach is best enjoyed with a walk along the sand at sunset. A few resorts line the coast if you want to stay, and boat rides can be arranged to small islands nearby.
The sea here can be rough, especially during the monsoon, so treat swimming with caution and follow local advice.
Best time to visit
October to March is the best season, with clear skies and comfortable weather for beach walks and sightseeing. The monsoon brings heavy rain and big waves; some travellers enjoy the drama of the coast at that time, but outdoor plans are limited.
Getting there by road
Maravanthe lies about 55 km north of Udupi, and the drive along the coast is part of the appeal. Travellers coming from Bengaluru often route through Chikkamagaluru and Agumbe, passing forested ghats, waterfalls and troops of monkeys along the way. Mangaluru airport is roughly 110 km away, with taxis available, and Kundapura railway station is about 18 km.
Combine with Udupi
Udupi is an easy add-on for a day of temple visits and good vegetarian food.
- Udupi Sri Krishna Matha
- Anantheshwara Temple
- Anegudde Vinayaka Temple
- St Lawrence Shrine, Attur (Karkala)
Tips for your visit
Plan to reach by late afternoon so you can see the sunset from the sand and then the lights on the river side. Carry cash, as facilities in the village are limited, and try the fresh seafood at local eateries or in Kundapura. We can plan a coastal circuit that covers Maravanthe with Udupi, Murudeshwar and Gokarna.
