Kulasekarapattinam Mutharamman Temple travel guide

The Mutharamman Temple stands in the coastal village of Kulasekarapattinam, south of Tiruchendur in Thoothukudi district. It is dedicated to the goddess Mutharamman, a form of Durga, and is best known for Kulasai Dasara, one of the largest Dasara celebrations in India after Mysuru. At festival time lakhs of devotees arrive, many in elaborate costumes, and the whole village turns into a stage.

History and legend

Kulasekarapattinam was once a busy port, said to be named after the Pandya king Maravarman Kulasekaran, and was used to collect duty on salt and pearls. Tradition says the king built a north-facing shrine for Durga at the north-east edge of the town and adorned her with a pearl necklace, giving the name Muthu-aram-amman. Another story holds that the goddess appeared in a sculptor's dream and directed him to make her image.

Kulasai Dasara

The festival falls in September or October and runs for about ten days, beginning with a flag hoisting at the temple. Each night the goddess is taken out in procession in a different form. On Vijayadashami, at midnight on the beach, she appears as Mahishasura Mardini riding a lion and slays the demon Mahisha, followed by fireworks.

A distinctive custom is vesham: devotees take vows, dress as Kali, kings, monkeys, beggars and other characters, and collect alms in nearby villages, which they then offer to the goddess. Folk dances and masked performances fill the streets through the festival.

Other festivals and beliefs

Maha Shivaratri and lamp pujas are also held here. Many devotees come to pray for relief from pox and eye ailments.

Timings and how to reach

Darshan hours are 6–11 am and 4–8 pm. Wear modest clothing that covers the shoulders and knees.

Tiruchendur, a short drive north, has the nearest railway station and frequent buses to the temple. Thoothukudi airport is the closest, and Thiruvananthapuram is another option. Madurai is about 200 km away. Manapad beach and the Kattabomman memorial fort at Panchalankurichi are good additions, and we can plan a Tiruchendur–Kulasai trip around Dasara.
