What to see
The fort spreads across the hilltop with heavy stone walls that have weathered but still stand firm. Look out for:
- At least 15 bastions positioned to cover every approach
- Gun positions said to have held around 60 cannons, along with many windows and balconies
- An old water management system that kept the garrison supplied
- Nethi Bhavi, a large stone structure that can be seen from much of the town
- Stories of hidden tunnels linking the fort with Warangal, which remain legend rather than fact
History
Khammam sat on the edge of several kingdoms, and the fort reflects that. It began as a Kakatiya stronghold, protecting the region from raids, and passed through the hands of later dynasties. The Qutb Shahi rulers carried out major renovations, and its mix of styles shows these different phases of building.
Tips for your visit
The paths up the hill wind through gates and old walls, so wear comfortable shoes and carry water. Early morning or late afternoon light is best for the views from the top, and the climb is more pleasant outside the midday heat. Facilities on site are basic.
October to March is the best season for sightseeing in the Khammam area. Pair the fort with Lakaram Lake and the town's temples for an easy half day.
How to reach
Khammam has a railway station with good connections, and the fort is a short auto ride from both the station and the bus stand. The nearest airport is in Hyderabad, roughly 200 km away. We can include Khammam on a Telangana road trip linking Warangal and Bhadrachalam.
