Karwar travel guide

Karwar sits on Karnataka's northern coast where the Kali river meets the Arabian Sea, a short drive south of Goa. It is a relaxed town rather than a party spot, suited to travellers who want clean beaches, fresh seafood and gentle water sports. Konkani, Marathi and Kannada influences mix here, and the town has long ties with the armed forces, especially the Navy, which has a major base nearby.

Beaches

Each beach around Karwar has its own character, and a hired bicycle is a pleasant way to move between the closer ones.

Things to do

Tagore Beach is best at dawn, when fishing boats come in. Beside it are a warship museum and an aquarium, both worth an hour. At Kodibagh you can try canoeing, kayaking, pedal boats and banana boat rides. From here a short boat trip takes you to Kurumgad Island, a lightly inhabited island with snorkelling and scuba diving.

Food is a big reason to stay a few days. Fish curries, fried seafood and coastal rice dishes are served in simple family restaurants as well as hotels.

Tips for your visit

The Majali black-sand cove is remote, so go with company and head back well before dark. Water sports are seasonal and stop during the monsoon. October to March brings the most settled weather for beach days.

How to reach

Goa's Dabolim airport is roughly two hours away by road. Karwar has its own station on the Konkan Railway, with trains from Mangaluru, Goa, Mumbai and other cities. By road it is about 85 km from Goa and well linked with the rest of Karnataka. We can combine Karwar with Gokarna and Goa on a coastal itinerary.
