Gundala travel guide

Gundala is a small place in the Godavari country of Telangana, close to the temple town of Bhadrachalam. Pilgrims come for its natural hot spring, which is linked to the serpent king Adi Shesha, while others come for the forested hills, viewpoints and waterfalls around it. It works well as a quiet add-on to a Bhadrachalam visit.

What to see

The hot spring is the main draw. It covers an area of about 100 square yards, and local belief holds that it was created by Adi Shesha and that a dip removes past sins. There is no fee to visit, though donations towards upkeep are welcome.

Around Gundala the land rises into green, rolling hills. Viewpoints such as the Gundala winter viewpoint and the Pargi sunset point are good for sunrise and sunset, and the Cheemalagudem waterfalls are a pleasant spot to spend time outdoors.

Bhadrachalam nearby

Most visitors pair Gundala with Bhadrachalam, whose Sri Rama temple dates to the seventeenth century and is often called the Ayodhya of the south. Bhadrachalam and Khammam also have the nearest hotels, from budget rooms to mid-range guesthouses.

Best time to visit

October to March is the best season, with temperatures roughly between 15°C and 29°C, ideal for the hot spring and walks. July to September is the time for waterfalls, when the rains fill them and the countryside turns green. March to May is very hot; if you do come then, go out early in the morning.

How to reach

Hyderabad has the nearest airport, and from there a taxi or bus takes around five to six hours. Bhadrachalam Road railway station, on the line linking Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam, is the closest railhead. Roads connect the area to the main towns of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Tips for your visit

Pack loose cotton clothes, sturdy footwear, sunscreen and a small first-aid kit. Carry a change of clothes if you intend to bathe in the spring. We can plan a combined Bhadrachalam and Gundala trip.
