The story
According to tradition, Krishna brought Rukmini to Madhavpur and the two were married in this village. The fair recreates the wedding each year, with the deity carried in procession much as a bridegroom would be, and devotees join in as if attending a family marriage.
When it happens
The fair is held in spring, in the Hindu month of Chaitra, which usually falls in March or April. It begins around Ram Navami and runs for several days. Exact dates move each year with the lunar calendar, so check before you plan.
How it is celebrated
For most of the year Madhavpur is a sleepy place, but during the fair stalls, rides and food vendors fill the open ground. Temple rituals mark the wedding, and folk songs and dances go on late into the evening.
The Mer people of the region take a prominent part, dressed in traditional clothes, and their own customs around marriage add to the atmosphere. Visitors get a vivid look at rural Saurashtra life that is hard to find elsewhere.

Where to see it and how to reach
Madhavpur lies on the coastal road near Porbandar, which is the most convenient base. Porbandar has a railway station and a small airport, and road connections run along the coast to Somnath and Dwarka. Rail lines towards Junagadh and Jamnagar serve the wider region.
Because the village is small, rooms are limited during the fair; staying in Porbandar and driving in for the day is often easier. We can plan a Saurashtra circuit that combines the fair with Somnath, Dwarka and Porbandar.
