Chennakeshava Temple
King Vishnuvardhana began the temple in 1117 CE, and work on it is said to have continued for about 103 years. It is dedicated to Chennakeshava, a name meaning 'handsome Keshava', a form of Vishnu. The temple stands on a raised platform, and its star-shaped outer walls are covered with friezes of elephants, lions and horses, scenes from the epics and dozens of graceful bracket figures (madanikas), including a woman looking into a mirror.
Legend links these dancing figures to Queen Shantala Devi, a gifted dancer believed to have danced before the shrine while it was being built. Take time to look closely at these figures, as each one is carved in remarkable detail. The large gopuram at the entrance was added later by the Vijayanagara rulers.
Nearby
Most travellers pair Belur with the Hoysaleswara Temple at Halebidu, which has even more densely carved walls. Shravanabelagola, with its tall monolithic statue of Bahubali, is also within reach and makes a good addition for a two-day trip.
Best time to visit
October to March is the most comfortable season, with winter temperatures between about 15°C and 28°C, ideal for walking around the temple courtyards. April and May are hot and best avoided. The monsoon months turn the surrounding countryside green and suit travellers who do not mind occasional rain.
How to reach
Hassan, about 38 km away, is the nearest major railway station, and buses and taxis run from there to Belur. By road, Belur is roughly a five-hour drive from Bengaluru and around three hours from Mysuru. The nearest airports are Mangaluru and Bengaluru. We can arrange a car for a Belur, Halebidu and Shravanabelagola circuit.
