Cubbon Park, Bangalore

Right in the middle of Bangalore, between M.G. Road and the government quarter, Cubbon Park gives the city a large patch of shade and birdsong. Laid out in 1870, it is where locals come to walk, jog, read and unwind. For a visitor it is an easy half-day stop that combines old buildings, big trees and a feel for everyday Bangalore life.

History of the park

The park was created in 1870 and first carried the name Meade's Park, after Meade, then acting Commissioner of Mysore, who set it up. It later became known as Cubbon Park, after Sir Mark Cubbon, a long-serving British commissioner of the region.

In 1927 its official name was changed to Sri Chamarajendra Park, marking the silver jubilee of Krishnaraja Wodeyar's rule over Mysore. Most people, though, still call it Cubbon Park.

What to see

Much of the pleasure here is simply the greenery. The Directorate of Horticulture looks after the grounds, which hold around 6,000 plants and trees, including tall rain trees and clumps of bamboo. Lawns open out between the trees, and the broad paths suit walking and cycling.

The State Central Library, a red Gothic-style building, stands inside the park and is worth seeing even from outside. Statues and memorials scattered through the grounds recall the city's administrative past.

Timings and rules

Visitors can walk in at any time during the day. Between 5 am and 8 am every morning, vehicles are not allowed on the park roads and the area is kept as a silent zone, which makes early morning the most pleasant time to walk here.

How to reach

Because it sits in the heart of the city, the park has entrances off Hudson Circle, Ambedkar Veedhi, Kasturba Road and M.G. Road. Kempegowda International Airport is roughly 45 km away, and autos, taxis, buses and the metro all serve the area.

Tips for your visit

Come early if you want cool air and the car-free roads, or late afternoon for softer light if you like photography. Weekends bring families and children, while weekdays are quieter apart from the lunch-hour crowd from nearby offices. Wear comfortable shoes, carry water and allow two to three hours if you plan to wander the whole park. We can add Cubbon Park to a Bangalore city day in your itinerary.
